Stellenbosch Watch is:

  • a Non-Profit Company (NPC - 2002/005021/08),
  • supported and led by the community,
  • focussed on making Stellenbosch a safe place for all its residents.

Main Objective of Stellenbosch Watch

Stellenbosch Watch aims to make Stellenbosch and its surrounds a safe living, working and studying environment for its law-abiding residents and visitors.

We involve local policing, safety and security institutions as well as the residents.

We do this by:
  • Appointing service providers to provide security services.
  • Co-operating and co-ordinating with "neighbourhood watch" groups patrolling the Area.
  • Initiating and participating in safety awareness and crime prevention programmes.
  • Facilitating an open dialogue with the public regarding issues of safety, crime prevention and the like and
  • Fostering good relationships and co-ordination with all local security bodies and organisations in the area, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Municipal Law & Order and the Campus Security of the Stellenbosch University.

Stellenbosch Watch control room serves as the central communication base for the Stellenbosch Safety Initiative (SSI). The SSI is a partnership between SAPS, the Stellenbosch Municipality (Law Enforcement, Stellenbosch traffic and the fire brigade), the University of Stellenbosch (Campus Security) and private security companies

Stellenbosch Watch is a non-profit company. It has a Board of Directors, elected annually by members at the Annual General Meeting, which is responsible for the management of the company.

Members include individuals households, farms, businesses and educational institutions.

Every paid-up member can attend the Annual General Meeting and has a vote.

Stellenbosch Watch has also a full time Chief Executive who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the company and reports to the Board.

Stellenbosch Watch finances tactical & patrol bakkies that are doing 24/7 patrol duty in the various residential areas with the aim of preventing crime in those areas. This visible patrolling has been very successful in curbing crime.

A security firm’s vehicles are normally stationed at a central point. When they receive a callout to respond to an alarm, they will react, return to the central point. At Stellenbosch Watch the emphasis is placed on pro-active patrolling as opposed to reactive response.

Be Responsible for your Safety

How can residents assist Stellenbosch Watch to be more effective in the combating of crime?
The only solution is for all law-abiding residents of Stellenbosch to take responsibility, collectively and individually, for combating crime by doing the following:
  • Assume responsibility for your own safety by ensuring that your own homes are safeguarded and that basic safety measures are adhered to. For example, ensure that doors are locked, alarms are activated when you go to sleep or leave the house, and always be on the look-out for suspicious people.
  • Immediately notify the SAPS and Stellenbosch Watch if there are people loitering or a suspicious incident takes place – it does not matter how insignificant it may look, it may prevent a potentially dangerous crime.
  • Ensure that you know your neighbours and that you all look out for one another’s safety.
  • Get involved in existing neighbourhood watches and if one does not exist, establish one to patrol the neighbourhood.
  • Enrol with Stellenbosch Watch – the more members we have the more patrol vehicles can be deployed in our town and the rural areas and the more difficult it becomes for criminals and potential criminals to endanger our safety!
  • We the Stellenbosch Watch want to invite you to become a member of the organization.
